Apostasy – Present And Accounted For

I have spent a lot of time over the years, taking trips to other nations and continents where the Gospel is better received.  Yes, I know we are to “be instant in and out of season,” but nonetheless it is truly exhilarating to observe people respond favorably to the Word of God.  My heart goes out to missionaries who spend a lifetime toiling away in a pagan environment and fail to see even one convert.  Our church is hosting a revival the week after next.  Let me contrast what a real revival is compared to what we call a revival.  A real revival is when the saints of God are convicted by the Word of God.  When this happens, the saints fall in line with God’s will for their lives and obey Him.  The lost become saved!  THAT is God’s idea of a windswept and heart touching revival.  The book of Acts is one big revival.  The modern definition however is different – It is when the local church hosts a guest speaker for a period of time, and he expounds upon the Word of God to the congregation and friends.  These use to be very effective, prior to our nation becoming Gospel hardened.  Now, the church gravitates towards other less convicting pursuits such as music concerts, block parties, trunk or treat, Easter egg hunts and the like.  I attempted to advertise our revival on a contemporary Christian radio station’s website, and it has been “pending” for two weeks.  Funny, when I requested promotions for contemporary musicians we just hosted, they went right through.  Why is this?  Well, the radio station, I will hide their identity and just call them “W Christian Lite,” promotes the feel good aspects of the Gospel and not the whole counsel of God.  I appreciate all kinds of Christian music, but note the absence of key doctrines from many of the contemporary musicians:  1)Some are ashamed of the mere name of Jesus.  We sometimes wonder who they are singing about when the only reference to the Lord is an impersonal pronoun.  2)Lacking also is conviction over sin and the need for repentance, without which one cannot become saved.  This is often totally absent.  3)The reality of hell is rarely mentioned.  4)The need to be born again (John 3:3) and receive a new heart is omitted.  …..and others.  The question remains:  “Is a partial “grace only Gospel,” really the Gospel.  My answer is:  “No way Jose.”  On the bright side, the one faithful Christian radio station in our area, WSEB, will promote the revival.  I will not have to even listen to check and see if they share the news of our revival.  How do I know this?  Because I know who the station manager is, and the preachers they feature, and the great Christian aura about their station in general.  Many of our churches have false doctrine, watered down doctrine, and no longer even focus on the Bible in their teaching and preaching.  The churches that are still truly faithful (and we praise the Lord for them), are often sparsely attended, with a great majority of their membership being seniors.  We have arrived at the generation who knows not the Lord.  When prayer and Bible reading were excised from the schools in the early 1960’s, we set the stage for our nation to turn away from the Lord.  We have sown the wind, and are reaping the whirlwind.  God is not mocked and we will reap what we have sown.

Hosea 8:7 King James Version (KJV)

For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk; the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.

Galatians 6:7 King James Version (KJV)

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

The Bible forecasts NOT a revival but a great falling away (apostasy) before the coming of the Lord.

2 Thessalonians 2:3 King James Version (KJV)

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

Now, let not your heart be troubled.  In spite of the sad conditions in our apostate nation today, this is all a forecast for a great soon coming future for the believer:

Luke 21:28 King James Version (KJV)

28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

Amen and amen!

A 21st Century Spiritual Resurrection / David Lane

When they come to write the story of the spiritual resurrection of 21st Century America, a new type of shepherd will likely have come forward.

These forerunners will have stood in flat contradiction to everything that the Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton types holds dear.

***   Baby Butcher For President 2016   ***

How would you like to be aborted Hillary, just before you would have been born?  You are a murderer.

They will contradict, denounce and protest in the name of God what Secularism has done to America. They “will love Christ and the souls of men to the point of willingness to die for the glory of the one and the salvation of the other. But they will fear nothing that breathes with mortal breath.*

With a Hillary Clinton presidency America is about to learn something that can be learned in no other way, the ethical path is the only safe one. “When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I”, cried the sweet Psalmist of Israel.** ” Tribulation brings us to God and God to us.”***

The anointed eye recognizes that what is needed today are those with the ability to “appraise the religious scene as viewed from God’s position, and to tell us what is actually going on.”**** Most desperately needed is not another market research firm specializing in the study of religious beliefs and behavior of the American pews, but thermostats who impact and regulate the spiritual climate of the nation.

Evangelical pastors and pews must take our game to the next level. Fundamentally we must begin to comprehend that Religious Liberty will be won by organizing and notSunday sermons. A Sunday sermon is not a denomination of political currency; mustering and marshaling parishioners to the public square is. But be not mistaken, the teaching of the whole counsel of God in America’s pulpits, and the resurrection of prayer in America’s churches — led by the senior pastor — will determine if America remains free.

The disciples of godless Secularism are not cowed by sermons, marches, or prayer rallies. Those doing this to our country must be removed from the public stage, that’s the initial stopgap. Following secularists removal from office — if America is to be saved — Secularism will have to be demolished, eliminating its choke-hold on the media, public education, higher learning, Big Business, the Supreme Court, Federal Courts, and Hollywood.

What Secularism is doing to America is gambling with the very life of the nation; most Americans are unalarmed and clueless. What is the matter with the people of America?

If America is to receive a 21st Century spiritual resurrection, it will likely be by other means than deployed in the last three-quarters century. If the church in the 21st Century is to recover from the injuries suffered in the 20th Century, there must appear a new model in the public square. The “Inside the Beltway” and “Family Policy Boys” approach will never do. Running a bus across a state the week before an election, when 50% of the vote is already in from early voting, is political suicide…and naiveté.
We need a Gideon or Rahab to make a stand.

Sexual Sin And Hypocrisy In The Church

The theme of sodomy/homosexuality is a hot button topic today, frequently coming up in conversation.  President Obama is doing everything he can, in order to promote the acceptance of this sinful lifestyle throughout our country.  Rainbow colors have been splashed on the White House, as the Supreme Court advocated “gay marriage” through a 5-4 vote.  The Bible is replete with scriptures in both the Old and New Testaments, that label sodomy as not only a sin but an abomination.  All three monotheistic religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) unequivocally condemn this sin.  The Christian church needs to show love for people engrossed in this lifestyle, but there is a dire need for those who engage in this practice to repent.  There is no free pass – this is not a “special” sin we overlook.  The challenge the church has, in my opinion, is dealing with those who engage in this lifestyle, and erroneously interpret God’s demand for repentance as hatred.  The church needs to be consistent in revealing the sinners’ need for contrition in order to be saved.  Helping people to see their sin is love.  If there is no repentance on the sinners’ part, we continue to show them unconditional love, yet they will not be allowed to join with the body of Christ.

Now here is where it gets dicey.  If we were to converse  in church about the aforementioned paragraph, we would all be on the same page.  But if I am presiding over conversation and I mention the sin of fornication, then things get quiet.  All of the sudden, the aura of self righteous condemnation dissipates.  I observe changes in body language, inflection of tone in speech, and even stone cold silence.  Fornication, of course, is the generic sweeping term that includes any kind of sexual union outside of holy matrimony.  Any relationship outside of marriage is absolutely forbidden.  As the old joke goes:  “Preacher, you have left preaching and gone to meddling.”  No, the message is now focused on your sin or your struggle.  This is the premier sin that I have run into in the church for well over three decades.  Our culture is so base today, that in many a church, fornication flies under the radar.  I have seen many who are living this lifestyle, come to church consistently, and never come under conviction!  The Bible tells us that an unrepentant fornicator will not go to heaven.  We are glad when all people come to church, but the desired effect of anyone’s attendance is for their repentance, without which one cannot be saved!  If blatant sexual sinners are consistently attending church without a change in their hearts, it is evident that the entire counsel of God is not being preached or adhered to.  If they keep living in sin without a change of heart, they become “leaven” in the church, and they convince visitors and enquirers, that this must be all right, because absolutely no one confronts the issue!  This also gives the enemies of God a chance to blaspheme, since they look inside the church and conclude that if their lifestyle is no different from mine, why should I be a part of the church?  Good question.

The church in America will continue to decline dramatically until if/when we once again become the church the way the Lord meant for it to be – described graphically in the book of Acts.

Ephesians 5:3 King James Version (KJV)

But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;

David Platt  International Mission Board (IMB) President    Theme Of Conference   II Timothy 4:5

David’s Text  Ephesians 2:1-10

Ephesians 2:1-10  King James Version (KJV)

And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Not of works, lest any man should boast.

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

  • David Platt goes straight to the message and ignores small talk, jokes, etc.

God’s character    Ephesians 2:4  Never preach Gos as a means to an end.  (Name it, claim it.  Blab it, grab it).

Offense of sin    Ephesians 2:5  We are dead in our sins.  Everything obeys God except for man.  We must emphasize the severity of sin.  Ex.  Lot’s wife, the man picking up sticks in the Old Testament on the Sabbath, Ananias and Saphira.

Sufficiency of Christ   Ephesians 2:5-6  How can God justify us without condemning us?  Through the cross!

Personal response   Faith   Ephesians 2:8-9  Salvation is a gift we receive.  It cannot be earned.

Eternal urgency   We do not emphasize hell.  Ephesians 2:7   Hell is a burning fire and smoking sulfur.  “Forever and ever.”  There is a real wrath for those outside of Christ.

Life transformation  Ephesians 2:10  New life!

This aforementioned outline used by David Platt is used to share the Gospel one on one with people.  It was developed by a pastor in Texas and is taught by a ministry called “One Conversation.”  They commence by using the phrase “Can we talk?”  Their history and ministry is as follows:

“Can We Talk?” is a six-week emphasis to equip church members to share the Gospel conversationally. Pastor John Meador of FBC Euless, Texas, began this program in 2013, and since then we’ve seen hundreds of members become equipped and confident in sharing their faith. It equips church members through 20-minute pastor-led teaching sessions, and provides hands on experience by going on visits to share the Gospel in the community.
In response to increasing interest from other churches, Pastor Meador launched a non-profit organization called “One Conversation” to host conferences for pastors and other church leaders to learn how “Can We Talk?” can work in their church. In this short amount of time thousands have heard the Gospel and hundreds have come to faith in Christ. The renewed emphasis on sharing the Gospel is transforming communities and church cultures. “Can We Talk?” is easy to learn, easy to teach, sustainable, and it’s working.

Synopsis Of The Pastor’s Conference And Southern Baptist Convention ~ June 12-15, 2016

This is a brief review of the annual Southern Baptist Pastor’s Conference and Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), with several detailed articles to follow.  The theme was Awaken America, Reach The World.  Agree, Unite, Pray.  The Pastor’s Conference featured music from local Christian choirs and ensembles, and from the well known contemporary Christian group “Passion.”  Some of the main points touched on were the fact that there are less Southern Baptist churches and less baptisms each year.  (Southern Baptists are still the largest Protestant Denomination in America with over 46,000 churches, but we are going backwards).  The good news is that there are more church plants than ever.  The need for unity and evangelism were stressed, with prayer as the foundation.  Simplicity was asserted, realizing that the Holy Spirit, and NOT programs, is the key to success with the Lord.  A multifaceted strategy to reach millennials and diverse groups of ethnics is of great importance, especially since one in five Southern Baptists is from a minority ethnic group!  Speakers emphasized the fact that we need to reach the lost, and not quibble over minor theological differences.

The atmosphere of the convention was very peaceful.  St. Louis is a bastion of conservatism, featuring well over 40,000 Boy Scouts in the area, many advancing to Eagle Scout, and performing good works in the community.  There were absolutely no picketers or protesters present, which was a pleasant surprise.  One gentleman with a megaphone was speaking to the Southern Baptist pastors as they entered the conference, and challenging them to lead their congregations in evangelism and soul winning.  I appreciated his words.  He was spot on.

A summary of the business at hand featured a large variety of subjects.  The resolutions that were brought forth from the executive committee were passed, usually by unanimous votes following discussion and/or amendment(s).  The resolutions involved the LGBT community, the Confederate Flag, and several other topics- details will be shared in future entries.  Tremendous grace was displayed when the new SBC president was elected.  Three candidates originally contested for this office, and the final two, Steve Gaines of Belleview Baptist Church in Tennessee and J.D. Greer of Summit Church in Durham, North Carolina, were virtually tied without a clear winner.  Grace won the day; details to follow.

It was truly a peaceful convention. filled with a spirit of unity.

The Media And Press Are Full Of Lies, And Here Is Yet Another:

Proud supporters of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia

This above sentence was simply a copy and paste, located where I obtained information from the search engine Google today.  It states that Google is a proud supporter of this day.  Where did this day come from?  Sounds like a United Nations decision, coming from a subcommittee chaired by Barack Hussein Obama.   We now have an “International Day” against the “fear” of homosexuals and transgenders.  I mean the word phobia is a synonym for the word fear, correct?  Earth to our international liberal press:  Christians who are born from above do NOT fear people living perverted lifestyles and claiming they were “born that way.”  We believe this lifestyle is what the Bible calls “sin.”  Yes, I know this is an antiquated word, but the Bible is full of verses in both the Old and New Testaments that not only call these lifestyles sinful, but they are also referred to as abominations in the sight of the Lord.  One must either repent of sin or suffer the eternal consequences just like the rest of us.  (Luke 13:3,5)

President Obama is busy, busy, busy endorsing sinful lifestyles as well.  He desires transgender bathrooms in the public school system across our nation.  He has bathed the White House in rainbow colors, endorsing the recent decisions for “Gay” Marriage from our apostate supreme court.  He just highlighted LGBT folks, rather than traditional mothers, on Mother’s Day, and has already declared June to be a month to recognize “Gay” marriages.  This, of course, was done in order to enhance the understanding of those narrow minded people who equate June with merely traditional marriages.

Whenever I see the president on the news (like many of you I turn him off but I cannot help but observe him striding across the lawn towards Air Force 1) he appears to be full of hubris, and enjoys trampling on Biblical morals.  Yet I see him on judgment day in my mind’s eye.  He shows no remorse for his actions.  He loves what he is doing to our Christian values.  I see an eternity filled with the “weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth, where the worm never dies and the fire is never quenched.”  He has no fear of God whatsoever, and seemingly enjoys dragging entire nations down with him.  The same can be said for Satan.  He thinks he will have some kind of great legacy.  Whenever I observe him, all I see is worm food.  We will all reap what we sow.  [Whereas President Obama seems to believe he is “hot stuff,” on the other hand, I believe given the direction he is heading, without repentance, some day he indeed will be “hot stuff.”]

Note:  All prominent internet providers are extremely liberal- Yahoo, Google, Facebook, etc., etc.  If you have spent any time at these sites, I am sure you have already realized this.  A great majority of Americans do not believe the press.

National Day Of Prayer: Thursday, May 5, 2016

Our nation has observed this day consistently since 1952, and sporadically throughout our history.  Obviously, it is not doing much if any good.  In the last few years, the weird, the bizarre, the profane, and perverse have been promoted and legalized.  If LGBT would have clamored for either/or restroom rights a generation ago, they would have been led to the outhouse.  “Gay” marriage is, and will always be an oxymoron, but our national lawmakers recognize this perversion for the first time in human history.  I would indeed pray fervently if I baked cakes for a living as a Christian.  …or if I were a florist or photographer.  As you know, they are being sued on a regular basis.

Let us take a peek inside of the Christian church today.  Wednesday night prayer meetings usually feature anemic attendances.  Often other activities during this time slot, both inside and outside of the church, take priority over Christians in prayer.  If Christians do not respond for prayer in these regularly scheduled prayer meetings, then why should the National Day Of Prayer seem more significant?  Is an emphasis of prayer ON THIS ONE DAY (actually one mere hour) not actually simply to assuage our consciences?  Is it not a token?  Is it not merely perfunctory lip service?  Is this not indicative of the Lord’s warnings that “You have a form of religion but deny the power thereof.”  Sunday night services are cancelled by many if not most churches today.  (I have always wondered what those preachers do on Sunday nights).

I would suggest we need a national week of mourning over the ineffectiveness of the National Day Of Prayer.  We all know the spiritual plumbing stated in the often quoted II Chronicles 7:14.  The verse is very true and it would work if employed.  We quote it but we do not live it.

2 Chronicles 7:14 King James Version (KJV)

14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

King James Version (KJV)Public Domain

The church has been out to lunch for well over a generation.  Most of us are familiar with revival NOT through experience, but only through what the  scriptures and history books tell us.  What does the church need to do?

1)We need to pray fervently…and not for just a day or for one hour within that day.  We need to pray without ceasing.  (I Thessalonians 5:17)

2)We need to humble ourselves, fast and mourn for this sin sick nation.  We should weep because the Lord has taken the great fearless preachers home (Jerry Falwell, Adrian Rogers, Dr. D. James Kennedy) and there are few if any who boldly proclaim God’s truth in the public arena.  We need to pray for the Lord to raise up other spiritual leaders.

3)We need to repent.  The doctrine of repentance is omitted from our pulpits today.  Without repentance, one cannot be saved.  (Luke 13:3,5)  Fornicators brazenly stride in the aisles of today’s church without remorse.  People live together outside of holy wedlock without shame.  Consciences are seared, as many lost souls have convinced themselves that somehow they are Christians.

If the body of Christ would do the above together, churches would become united, souls would be saved, laws would be changed, the community would be touched, and His presence would be felt.

Until if/when this happens, we will continue our slow descent into the abyss.

    The Nature of Repentance

For the past few months, the Holy Spirit has been convicting me of a lot in my life. While I’ve heard a lot of sermons concerning repentance from the preachers of this day (Piper, Washer, MacArthur…), I still have yet to fully grasp the nature of genuine repentance (assuming it’s possible to fully grasp it).

Suppose that there is a sin (among many other sins!) that has been plaguing me for a while. By the grace of God and His work of sanctification, I am able to repent of it and have victory over it. This freedom from this sin may last a week, a month, a year or even longer. However, at some point in the near or far future, suppose I fall back into this sin. What are the implications of this?

Does this mean that my repentance was not genuine? In other words, can you fall back into a sin that you’ve genuinely repented of? Do I really have victory over sin if I fall back into it at a later time? Along similar lines, how can you tell if repentance is genuine? I realize that repentance is much more than a recognition of sin and an apology for that sin but I have many doubts about my own repentance because I’m not 100% sure what it should look like biblically.

Note: While references to books would great for the future, I am a poor college student and currently unable to purchase any right now.

    1. Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted’ does not just apply to the bereaved but for those who mourn for their own sin which can still entangle them and trip them up. In fact one of the marks of genuine repentance is lamenting the struggle with ongoing sin.

Be sure that we all have our struggles with sin until the day we die. None of us are perfect and the Weslyen idea of sinless perfection in this life is erroneous. It is true that as Christians we are saved from the penalty of sin through Christ our penal substitute paying that penalty on the cross. With the help of the Holy Spirit we are freed from the power and grip sin had over us. However it is only in glory will we be free from the presence of sin. Until then it is part of the Christian struggle and the reality of Christian experience. So don’t beat yourself down with all this ‘Victorious Christian Living’ nonesense thatfills some of our Christian bookshops.

Having said all that, this does not excuse sin nor to treat it lightly nor to brush it under the carpet either. There is the obligation to put to death the misdeeds of the body. But as we grow in sanctification we become increasingly aware of sinful attitudes, habits etc.

We also need to be aware of taking care. Even older experienced Christians can, and do, still sin. We need to constantly be on the alert, to be watching out and to be depending upon the Lord to lead us.

If there is a particular sin that troubles you then don’t put yourself in a position to fall into it.

If you can imagine sin to be a big hole in the street that we keep falling into. Keep away from the hole don’t even look into it nor think we can walk around the edge. For it is guaranteed that we will fall into it. Walk down the other side of the street or better still, walk down another street.

      Chapter XIII
      Of Sanctification

      I. They, who are once effectually called, and regenerated, having a new heart, and a new spirit created in them, are further sanctified, really and personally, through the virtue of Christ’s death and resurrection,[1] by His Word and Spirit dwelling in them:[2] the dominion of the whole body of sin is destroyed,[3] and the several lusts thereof are more and more weakened and mortified;[4] and they more and more quickened and strengthened in all saving graces,[5] to the practice of true holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.[6]

II. This sanctification is throughout, in the whole man;[7] yet imperfect in this life, there abiding still some remnants of corruption in every part;[8] whence arises a continual and irreconcilable war, the flesh lusting against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh.[9]

III. In which war, although the remaining corruption, for a time, may much prevail;[10] yet, through the continual supply of strength from the sanctifying Spirit of Christ, the regenerate part does overcome;[11] and so, the saints grow in grace,[12] perfecting holiness in the fear of God.[13]

[1] 1CO 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. ACT 20:32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. PHI 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; ROM 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

[2] JOH 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. EPH 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word. 2TH 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth.

[3] ROM 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

[4] GAL 5:24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. ROM 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

[5] COL 1:11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness. EPH 3:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

[6] 2CO 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. HEB 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.

[7] 1TH 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

[8] 1JO 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. ROM 7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. PHI 3:12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.

[9] GAL 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 1PE 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.

[10] ROM 7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

[11] ROM 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. 1JO 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. EPH 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: 16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

[12] 2PE 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. 2CO 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

[13] 2CO 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

No, it just means that it is not perfect. This is one of the reasons why we are not justified on account of repentance, because even our repentance is mixed with sinful imperfection. As Augustus Toplady wrote, “Could my zeal no respite know, Could my tears forever flow, All for sin could not atone, Thou must save and Thou alone.” Hence, when we repent of known sin, we must also flee to Christ alone as providing the only sufficient and effective atonement for sin. As the Shorter Catechism teaches, Repentance unto life includes an apprehension of the mercy of God in Christ.

I knew Pastor Winzer could find a good use for an uninspired hymn.

You can’t beat those old hymns for devotional expressions of biblical truth.

Repentance involves many things, which have been dealt with well here. Matthew’s quote of Toplady is wonderful. If I can add more:

      To repent is
to agree with God that sin is sin.
to see your sin as sin.
to grieve over your sin and its implication in your relationship with God.
to turn away (a literal meaning) from your sin.
to turn to the only One who can restore your relationship.
It is characterized by a heart that habitually strives to recognize sin, turn from it and flee to God. This doesn’t mean that the habit isn’t occasionally broken. It means that your walk is characterized by repentance from sin, rather than attempting to cover your own sin. A heart of repentance rejoices when sin is exposed because such illumination provides an opportunity to grow in Christ-likeness.

I do not know, and I do not say, that a person cannot believe in Revelation and in evolution, too, for a man may believe that which is infinitely wise and also that which is only asinine. ~ CHS
