Cris Putnam ~ The Supernatural Worldview: A Biblical Perspective
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12)
“Beware lest anyone take you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world and not according to Christ.” (Colossians 2:8)
Supernatural Latin: supra (above) naturalis (nature)
Of or relating to an order of existence beyond the visible observable universe; especially: of or relating to God or a god, demigod, spirit, or devil.
Worldview The comprehensive set of basic beliefs in which one views the world and interprets experiences. The lens through which you view reality.
Culturally structured assumptions, values, and commitments underlying a people’s perception of reality.
1)What is really real? (Does God exist?)
2)What is the nature of the world around us?
3)What is a human being?
4)What happens to a person after death?
5)Why is it possible to know anything at all?
6)How do we know what is right and wrong?
7)What is the meaning of human history?
Religious Worldview Questions
1)Who are we?
2)Where are we?
3)What is wrong?
4)What is the answer?
Naturalism is taught in our universities. Nature is ultimate. They deny the existence of God, angels and demons. They deny the soul and the afterlife.
Naturalism is reductive materialism. Everything reduces to matter.
Oneism or monism “all is one” This is popular in the west and has eclipsed Christianity as a worldview.
“The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.”
1)Who are we? Human beings are the primate species homo sapiens that evolved from lesser hominids (or great apes).
2)Where are we? We are on earth, a mediocre planet amongst many that support intelligent life.
3)What is wrong? There is a lack of education and resources. Therefore, people are frustrated and suffer from low self-esteem.
4)What is the answer? The solution is more education and equitable distribution of resources by a benevolent world government.
Oneism (monism) One-ism believes that “all is one” and shares the same essential nature. Everything shares the same essence. In a word, everything is a piece of the divine.
New Pagan Worldview
1)Who are we? Human beings are ultimately one and the same, there is no true distinction between male and female.
2)Where are we? We live in a world of illusion that tells us things are separate.
3)What is wrong? We believe the lie of separateness and have forgotten our inner divinity.
4)What is the answer? The solution is know that you are God and that all is one, everything and everyone is ultimately divine.
Gender differences are minimized– it is all about how you feel at any given moment.
The contrary to oneism is twoism. Twoism= Super (above) natural.
Nature is created.
Spirit is ultimate.
“…because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator…” (Romans 1:25)
1)Who are we? Human beings are embodied spirits bearing the image of God in a body created by God.
2)Where are we? We are on earth, an utterly unique planet in a finely tuned universe created to fantastically precise specifications to sustain intelligent life and maintained moment to moment by an omnipotent, sovereign God.
3)What is wrong? The first humans were lured into sin. Sin is defined as humankind’s disobedience to God and rebellion against His moral standards.
4)What is the answer? The answer is the Gospel, the good news. Jesus Christ, God’s unique, eternal Son, came into the world in human form and gave His life as a sacrifice for our sins.
57% of Evangelicals believe many religions can lead to eternal life! That is what our culture thinks.
Pluralism- COEXIST. These religions are all equally valid. Pluralism dominates in India.
Jesus “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” (Matthew 7:13-14)
How can you be a Christian and deny what Jesus said?
From its founding until the 1960’s, American culture was defined by patriarchal, heterosexual and Judeo-Christian presuppositions. In one generation, this worldview has been largely replaced by a radically egalitarian, omnigendered, pansexual, multi-religious (and One-ist) belief system that has turned our contemporary world upside down. ~ Peter Jones One or Two: Seeing a World of Difference
“The western world is in transition with paganism on the rise. Spiritualism is progressively becoming a dominant religious preference within a postmodern age.” ~ Robert H. Bennett, I Am Not Afraid: Demon Possession and Spiritual Warfare, 290-291.
2005 Gallup Poll
75% Americans believe in the paranormal.
37% believe houses can be haunted.
21% believe they can personally communicate with the dead.
2009 Pew Forum Poll
29% in touch with the deceased. Up from 18% in 1996.
20% have been in presence of a ghost.
The number of people who have interacted with a ghost doubled between 1996 and today from 9% to 18%.
Paranormal is the New Normal
In some sectors of our society, the paranormal has become the new normal. Indeed, tens of millions of people have rejected Christianity and replaced it with belief in ghosts, spirit guides, psychic phenomena, out-of-body experiences, and the like. -Ron Rhodes
James Hunter- Institutional cultural power structures only change from the top down.
Anthony Flew (an atheist who changed his mind) “The laws of nature, life with its teleological organization, and the existence of the universe–can only be explained in the light of an Intelligence that explains both its own existence and that of the world. Such a discovery of the Divine does not come through experiments and equations. There is a God.”
Thomas Nagel “Mind and Cosmos: Why the Materialist Neo-Darwinian Conception of Nature Is Almost Certainly False.”
These intellectuals are moving away from Christianity, towards oneism and this new spiritualism.
Thomas Nagel “Even though the theistic outlook, in some versions, is consistent with the available scientific evidence, I don’t believe it, and am drawn instead to a naturalistic, though non-materialist, alternative.”
Even though they see the evidence, they do not want to accept the authority of a Christian God and adhere to the lifestyle.
Flaw of the Excluded Middle
Religion- Belief in God
Excluded Middle- Angels, Demons, Spirits
Science- Matter, Energy, Physical Laws
- natural order
Christianity has never really accounted for the excluded middle, and has given poor answers for it. Christians should be aware of it, be aware that it is there, and know what it may imply.
Paradigm- shifters are issues where mainstream discourse says one thing, and reality says another; and where accepting reality would radically change the way we see the world…
When it was determined that the earth was NOT the center of the universe (Copernicus), that was a huge paradigm shift.
Three Lines Of Evidence
2)Near Death Experience
3)Ghosts, Spirits, Apparitions
Book by Cris Putnam
Pantheism The doctrine that identifies God with the universe, or regards the universe as a manifestation of God. God is nature or God is within nature.
Monism A theory or doctrine that denies the existence of a distinction or duality in some sphere, such as that between matter and mind, or God and the world.
Global Consciousness Project
When human consciousness becomes coherent and synchronized, the behavior of random systems may change. Quantum event based random number generators (RNGs) produce completely unpredictable sequences of zeroes and ones. But when a great event synchronizes the feelings of millions of people, our network of RNGs becomes subtly structured. The probability is less than one in a hundred million that the effect is due to chance.
Example: Terrorist Attacks on 9/11/01.
Near Death Experience
1)Shows that your mind is not just a function of the brain.
2)Shows that you exist apart from your body.
3)The veridical NDE evidence is very convincing.
Veridical vs. Transcendental
Veridical = verifiable (this world)
Transcendental = not verifiable (other worldly)
Pam Reynolds NDE
- Operation Standstill
- Stop Heart
- Drain Blood From Brain
- Lower Body Temperature To 60 Degrees
- Sound Emitting Earplugs Verify Unconsciousness
- Flat EEG
Pam accurately described everything that happened during the operation from outside her body. She also heard a conversation between doctors! The Christian explains this in that we are a soul. The soul exists outside of the body. This is not a hoax and can be explained through Biblical truth.
Cris Putnam believes that some ghosts and apparitions are not demons. A woman in California drove her car over an embankment and died instantly. Her three year old son lived for a week in 103 degree heat. Several people reported seeing a naked woman standing by the curb where the car went off of the road. This lead the police to find the boy. The boy said there were angels by the car every night.
