Christians heartily enjoy this holiday on the basis of our observation of the advent of the Son of God. Others find peace and joy in other means, although it is a more temporary pleasure that fades quickly afterwards. In a troubled world, however, it gives respite from the sin that plagues this planet. In World War I, the Allied and German soldiers instituted a prolonged cease fire in their respective trenches on Christmas Day. They fellowshipped and exchanged gifts in “no man’s land” between the trenches. Immediately after this cease fire, they were threatened with court martial and execution if they did not get back to killing each other! So much for Peace On Earth And Good Will Towards Men.
