Three Quotations By Winston Churchill

During the early years of World War II, the Nazis took control of all of the mainland of Europe. The German blitzkrieg rolled, and Great Britain was seen as the next to fall. Hence one of Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s famous quotes was: “We will never surrender.” When told by pessimists of their immanent doom, he again quipped: “On the contrary, this will be our finest hour.” Nonetheless, due to the Nazi Messerschmitt fighters, Stuka dive bombers and ground bombers, it seemed as if the destruction of London and all of England was certain. The British were vastly outnumbered, and German air supremacy would initiate the planned ground invasion, named by the Germans as “Operation Sea Lion.” The British were in no position to withstand a ground attack and knew they had to stop the Germans in the air. Miraculously, the British held off the Germans with the help of God Almighty and the incredible courage of their vastly outnumbered fighter pilots. The fast and maneuverable Spitfire fighter plane was also a great asset to their air defense against the superior German Luftwaffe Air Force. Here is one of my favorite all time Winston Churchill quotations in reference to the fighter pilots of the Royal Air Force (RAF) who defended England in the Battle of Britain: “In the history of human conflict, never have so many owed so much to so few.”
