The Great Commission

Acts 1:8 “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
A typical stereotype of the Great Commission or soul winning is a Billy Graham crusade, a horse whisperer, a publicized church event, a guest revival speaker or Christians encountering the local neighborhood in twos, sharing the blessed Gospel of Jesus Christ. These activities are all fantastic in Christendom, but in my opinion they are all a distant second place in importance to cutting edge, grass roots evangelism. What am I referring to? Well, maybe instead of considering just Acts 1:8 and Matthew 28:19-20 as Great Commission verses, we could also add the following as well: Matthew 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” People want to see a sermon moreso than hear one! Lifestyle evangelism is the key to soul winning! Through the years, I have made some observations about Christians who live radiant lives and reach out to others with their faith. First of all, they rarely grumble and complain. They are focused OUTWARDLY on kingdom work, and do not have time to disparage the body of Christ. Secondly, they are positive and supportive, and they encourage, edify, build up and exhort their fellow saints. They are all about unity, and because of this, the spirit of koinonia becomes prominent in the church. They love to see Jesus, and only Jesus lifted up. They may appreciate a compliment but they do not live for it or expect it. They are focused OUTWARDLY on Jesus and their fellow saints. They become great lifestyle evangelists by default because they are the ones who the lost take note of! They have more of an impact on the Great Commission than a Bible thumper who preaches it but does not live it. Ouch! Have you ever been to a church without Matthew 5:16 Christians? They will usually be egocentric, selfish, and desiring credit for themselves. They will often be fault finders of other people…..after all, we all get what we are looking for. We Christians are all sanctified in spots….that is, we are all both weak and strong, and we are seen as righteous in the sight of God, only because of our faith in the blood of the Lamb. Churches full of this type of people always end up imploding, and are usually responsible for a new church on the other side of town! Let us look upward and outward. What is the formula? The very simple acrostic that I am sure you are already aware of— JOY, namely Jesus, others, and yourself. Actually, when we place Jesus Christ on the throne of our lives, everything else will fall into place. If you and I live this way, we will be a Great Commission Church. It has absolutely nothing to do with any program or methodology; it is all about walking in the Spirit and giving all of our being to God Almighty. Blessings, Pastor Steve
