An intriguing verse to many believers is Luke 18:8B, where Jesus made the following abstruse statement: “Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?” As a young believer when I first read this my reaction was “What?” After all, the good ole’ U.S. of A. was founded as a Christian nation and even conceding that many citizens may not be truly born again, most still realize that Jesus Christ is Lord and the only path to salvation. Businesses and the government shut down on Sunday, blue laws prevail, there are churches on every street corner, and witnesses swear on the Bible in court. No one really knew a lot about Islam or cared a great deal about the Muslims who dominated in Indonesia and thrived throughout the equatorial belt. It was a given that we were blessed because we were founded on the Judeo Christian ethic. Books have been written on the faith of our founding fathers, scriptures are replete on our goverment buildings, artwork and monuments, and the Christian faith is interwoven into the fabric of our founding documents such as the Mayflower Compact, Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The Supreme Court declared our country to be a Christian nation in the Trinity Decision in 1892 largely because of all of the above. We are talking America- Motherhood, Apple Pie, Chevrolet and Christianity….all staples of our nation. We post World War II Americans have lived in a nation with the greatest economy and blessings from above and have been largely insulated from the horrors, persecution and tribulations going on all around the world. Yes, the aforementioned scripture made little sense to me because of my sheltered environment, limited perspective, and a lack of understanding of how quickly things can change. And oh my, how they have changed! We are attacked today with apostasy within the church, intolerant religions outside of the church, a president who claims to be a Christian yet states we are no longer a Christian nation, marriages and families that are crumbling everywhere, our lack of political, military and economic stability and security, and a housing market that has turned the American dream into a nightmare……..and the list goes on and on. You know, as usual Jesus knew EXACTLY what He was talking about which is no surprise because He is God and He is the truth (John 14:6) and cannot lie. Now I have a better understanding of the direction the world is heading. Everyone is a “Christian” when things are peaches and creme, but our Lord also said that “…because iniquity will abound the love of many will wax cold…” There is an enormous disappearance of younger people in the church today across denominational lines. Examine not only the local church (regardless of size), but monitor the associations and conventions and you will see top heavy congregations in reference to age, yet another obvious sign of the denouement of the church. Today we see a lack of respect for decent values, nationalism is on the wane as many envision a global government, and a one size fits all world religion is on the horizon as well. In short, the world is rapidly becoming just what Jesus said it would, and any discerning believer can observe apostasy attacking the church! By the way, do you think there will be any faith on the earth when the Lord returns?
