What Is Your Contrition Condition?

Some years ago it was prophesied by William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, that there would come a day when we would hear the preaching of “religion without the Holy Spirit, Christianity without Christ, forgiveness without repentance, salvation without regeneration and heaven without hell.” We have arrived. Today, “user friendly” and “tolerance” are terms which have gone from the secular to the spiritual. Many evangelical fellowships are often especially soft on sin and our need to get right with God. They do not want to offend “seekers,” hence they preach a false gospel and are full of unregenerate members. This is why Christianity has little impact on our nation today. The doctrine of repentance is by passed in favor of an easy believism. Too many today are saying “…Here am I!” (Isaiah 6:8B) before they say “…Woe is me…” (Isaiah 6:5A) They are starched, ironed and pressed but they have never been washed. ….But what sayeth the scriptures? Jesus said “Repent or perish” (Luke 13:3,5). In the first words of Jesus’ public ministry, he picked up where John the Baptist left off: “From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17) The prophets and apostles preached the same. Repentance is the only doctrine that John the Baptist preached, as he paved the way for Jesus Christ. (Matthew 3:2 “And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”) We are told that adulterers, fornicators, idolaters, murderers, drunkards, etc., etc. shall not go to heaven (Galatians 5:19-21). The Bible tells us “the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, the murderers, whoremongers, sorcerers and liars shall be cast in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone.” (Revelation 21:8) There is an apostate teaching that offers forgiveness without repentance. It is IMPOSSIBLE to be saved without contrition——we do not feel the need of a Saviour until we know we are a sinner. We should have compassion for the lost–and true compassion for the unbelievers can only be an urgent warning to them to turn from their sinful condition to Jesus Christ! An artificial Christianity will send one to a real hell. When God Almighty judges, He will not grade on the curve, but by the cross. “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (II Corinthians 5:21) Salvation without repentance is like the sun without light or the ocean without water. In fact, salvation through Christ’s shed blood is one side of the coin—the flip side of the coin is a contrite heart. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a NEW CREATURE: OLD THINGS ARE PASSED AWAY; BEHOLD, ALL THINGS ARE BECOME NEW.” (II Corinthians 5:17 KJV) I cringe whenever I hear the convoluted soteriology which suggests how many sins I can “get away with” and still call myself a Christian. That theology abuses God’s grace and makes it something the Lord never intended. Read Romans 6:1-2 and Jude 4. Additionally, American folklore religion suggests that many are convinced that a weekly inoculation of a worship service makes one a believer, i.e. a compartmentalized view of Christianity. A true saving faith and salvation is reflected by servanthood, ministry, true discipleship, and a deep driven desire to live for Christ 24/7. More often than not, in the scriptures Jesus is called Lord and Saviour and in that order. The outward evidences of our faith are best summed up near the end of the sermon on the mount, Matthew 7:20– “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” Pastor Steve
