“The Harbinger” is a recent best selling (fiction) Christian book. The author is Jonathan Cahn, a Messianic Jew who leads Hope of the World ministries and the Jerusalem Center/Beth Israel, a worship center made up of Jew and Gentile, located in Wayne, Indiana.
I am one third into this tome and I find it very interesting………especially in light of the fact that I am involved with a course in Minor Prophets that teaches the same topic and theme. The book is all about a passage in Isaiah chapter 9 that would be very easy to pass over and miss the spiritual significance of what is being said. Cahn’s main premise is that Isaiah’s scripture about a specific judgment in ancient Israel, can also be used in order to understand the impact of September 11, 2001 in our nation. In other words, the events of 9/11/01 were a harbinger of things to come in our nation. Harbinger (New Webster’s Dictionary) means “a forerunner, that which precedes and gives notice to
something else.” Keep in mind that it is fiction, hence it would be analogous to reading the Left Behind Series. I already greatly appreciate the book in principle and theological truth, however, I believe the author is dogmatic in the direct scriptural one on one comparison of Isaiah 9 to both ancient Israel and the United States of America. Because of this, the book has received mixed reviews. Nonetheless, there is much for me to glean from this book, because the theme resonates with a Christian’s view of America’s sin, and the judgment which will come upon us because of it. There is no debate here— judgment is coming. I am sure you remember countless Christians who referred to 9/11 as a “wake up call.” Well, we have definately not woken up from our spiritual “Rip Van Winkle” nap, and Cahn contends that we will pay the price. The author correctly nails Biblical theological truths and gives light to our times. But……like all Christian books outside of the Bible itself, I will eat the meat and spit out the bones. The following entries on this blog site, the Lord willing, will outline the main points in the book that would be of benefit for us to know in order to understand the times in which we live.
